A black cat felt applique for a child's crocheted poncho
This crocheted poncho was cute, but missing something... a felt applique was perfect for adding Halloween flair. Use this idea to add any motif to your crochet projects or non-crocheted clothing. This is a great idea for repurposing and refashioning clothing from second-hand stores and dollar stores.
Materials needed:
- child's poncho or other garment
- scraps of black and orange felt
- Brown buttons and smaller black buttons
- Kreinik Fine #8 Braid in 051F Tangerine, 053F Lime, 052F Grapefruit, 5500 Pink Lemonade
- sharp embroidery needle with large eye
- needle threader
- black sewing thread
Instructions:
- Draw a freehand cat on paper, or look for cat templates online or from a child's coloring book. Following your pattern or freehand, cut out a black cat shape and an orange triangle nose from your felt pieces.
- Using the Kreinik Braid 051F Tangerine and the blanket stitch, outline the black cat.
- Add straight stitches in 5500 Pink Lemonade to create ears (see photo as a guide).
- Attach the triangle felt nose with 5500 in blanket stitch, sewing it right onto the black cat face. Add straight stitch whiskers with the 052F Grapefruit.
- Make a mouth with 5500 in straight stitches (use the photo as a guide).
- To make the eyes, we wrapped 053F lime in and around the holes of the large buttons. Then sewed the smaller black buttons on top of each lime button and on the felt using black sewing thread.
- Attach the cat applique to your clothing using hidden stitches and the black sewing thread.
